What are Job Vacancy Statistics?

Job vacancy surveys provide accurate, objective and timely information on the quantity and quality of job vacancies in local communities. Job vacancy statistics supply:

  • A measure of employer demand for workers in local communities.
  • A good labor market indicator.
  • An analysis of the characteristics of vacancies, including
    • Wages and benefits offered.
    • Education and experience requirements.
    • Whether full or part-time positions.
Who uses Job Vacancy Statistics?
  • Policymakers - to identify the quantity and quality of current job vacancies and employer demand for workers.
  • Economic development community - for analysis and marketing.
  • Workforce development community including WorkForce Center staff, Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs), employment and training service providers–to understand current labor market conditions and more effectively help jobseekers.
  • Employers -to determine hiring competition and prioritize human resource needs.
  • Jobseekers - for information on the location of jobs, their education and experience requirements, and wages and benefits paid.

Job vacancy statistics are particularly useful to (WIBs) and are a required data product under Section 305 of the Workforce Investment Act. Specifically, they can be used in the following ways:

  • Job vacancy statistics improve WIB members’ understanding of high-demand occupations, thereby aiding WIBs in their review of WIA-certified training offerings.
  • Job vacancy survey reports and customized analysis allow WIBs to communicate the needs of the business community to educational institutions. Individual institutions, as well as state higher education systems, can then better plan for the development or expansion of programs in shortage occupations.
  • Job vacancy survey reports and customized analysis enable occupation-specific or industry-specific project planning. Example: In Minnesota, analysis of healthcare workforce shortages was incorporated into statements of need for two successful H1B Training Grant proposals.
  • WIBs can provide job vacancy survey reports and customized analysis to employment service providers that are associated with One-Stop Centers. Example: Employment service providers in the Twin Cities metro area use job vacancy survey reports in jobseeker counseling and in recruitment services offered to area employers.
  • WIBs can market job vacancy survey reports and customized analysis to the employer community as a business decision-making tool - a benchmark for comparing an individual company’s hiring needs against hiring competition regionally.
  • By reaching out to employers through the job vacancy survey, WIBs can build employer awareness of and appreciation for their workforce development efforts and services.

Not all states use National JVS Workgroup methodology. We strongly urge users to read the methodology, if available, or call the analysts who produced the statistics for more information on methodology. Because methodology differs, not all statistics are comparable to each other.
